What is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition where distant objects appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. It occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Causes of Myopia

  • Genetics: Runs in families.
  • Excessive screen time or near work (reading, mobile use).
  • Lack of outdoor activity, especially during childhood.

Symptoms of Myopia

  • Squinting or straining to see far away
  • Difficulty seeing distant objects like road signs or boards
  • Headaches due to eye fatigue
  • Difficulty seeing clearly while driving, especially at night

Treatment Options for Myopia

Spectacles & Contact Lenses

The most common and non-invasive way to correct myopia.

Myopia Control in Children

  • Low-dose atropine drops
  • Multifocal lenses
  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses
  • Outdoor activity recommendations

Surgical Correction for Adults

  • Contoura Vision (Topography-guided LASIK)
  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) for high myopia or thin cornea
  • Standard LASIK / PRK options based on eligibility

Frequently Asked Questions

No. But it can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Progression can be slowed in children.
Usually after age 18–21, once the eye power has been stable for at least a year.
Mild myopia isn’t dangerous, but high myopia can increase the risk of long-term retinal problems.
